超级名厨戈登.拉姆齐负责这个厨房并把主厨们分成两组——红队和蓝队。各队要通过各种挑战来竞争，君岛如为南加州大学步操乐队提供食物, 制作一份50年代特别的菜单，君岛为一个五十周年结婚纪念日备办食物等。虽然挑战很折磨人，但是奖励却十分丰厚，比如说获胜的队伍可以在海边尽情享受，或是搭乘直升机去菜肴精美的餐馆。而输的一方却要留下来完成那些无聊的任务，包括打扫厨房，擦洗银器，熨烫亚麻布，准备晚会。随着被淘汰的厨师们逐渐离场，只有那些能吸引住拉姆齐眼球的主厨才能进入下一轮。主厨们都觊觎着黑色主厨夹克，互相竞争，力求再坚持一个星期。最后两名选手将会进行一场白刃战，用一道五星级菜肴取悦拉姆齐。但是，只有将激情，技艺，魄力完美结合的人才会是《地狱厨房》的赢家。
