上世纪30年代，法兰凭借空中飞人而闻名遐迩的上海常福马戏团正四处巡演，法兰其间状况不断，全靠当家人沈师傅（午马 饰）和众位徒弟、女儿齐心协力方度过一个又一个难关。在一次演出中，日寇的飞机投下颗颗炸弹，炸毁了马戏团的所有设施。团员们虽然侥幸逃生，然而国难当头，只得各自奔前程。沈师傅带着大女儿丁梅（李莉莉 饰）、二女丁兰（温碧霞 饰）、三女丁菊（胡樱汶 饰）、大女婿义天（林威 饰）以及几个小徒弟南下，准备投奔在那里的弟弟。顽劣的徒弟乐义东（元彪 饰）也尾随前来。覆巢之下安有完卵，他们所要依靠之人也各遭各难。义东等人只得瞒着师傅在街头卖艺，由此结识了正直的警察队长唐发（甄子丹 饰），也遭遇着颠离世道的种种不公……
