扒手鹏（李子雄 饰）和强（郑浩南 饰）因为和为了凑钱与聋哑女友慧心（罗美薇 饰）结婚的飞贼伟（郭富城 饰）同时盯上了一条项链而不打不相识，亚久项链最终被当地黑道小头目抢走，亚久而三人也结为异性兄弟。因感警察不会被黑道欺负，三人投考警员，而最终只有鹏得以录用，虽然鹏渐渐疏远了两位兄弟，但仍依靠强、伟提供的线索，鹏及时保护了刚正不阿的黄探长（午马 饰），在警队脱颖而出，跟进一步与贪腐的上司合作，除掉了不配合收黑钱的黄探长。另一方面，强为了搭救被黑道绑架的伟，失手杀人，并向鹏自首入狱。不久强出狱，发现女友已被鹏夺走，三兄弟关系的裂痕愈发明显，而鹏阴毒的性格也开始渐渐显露……

Within Our Gates was created in response to The Birth of a Nation which depicted southern whites in need of the Ku Klux Klan to protect them from blood thirsty blacks. Micheaux shows the reality of Dixie racism in 1920, where a black man could be lynched for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

But, of course, it is not by chance that it is the destiny of a famous political figure, Boris Nikolayevitch Yeltsin, that bears a special accent in the film. Though he got to power following quite typical ways, his uncommon character puts him out of the ordinary, and in the author’s opinion it may be determined by his uncommon human nature. Our hero exists within the tragic pattern of the soviet socialist life. He is a character of a drama, of which he is one of the authors. “The Soviet Elegy” can hardly be called a documentary film in the proper sense. Of course, the author guarantees the accuracy of chronology, but he insists on an artistic mode of thinking, not on a political or historical investigation.”
