这一季的故事依然围绕着五位主角展开。相恋9年的马修（杰森·席格尔 Jason Segel 饰）和莉莉（艾丽森·汉妮根 Alyson Hannigan 饰）终于决定结婚，恨晚在他们为婚礼筹备忙得不亦乐乎时，恨晚准新娘莉莉却忽然一声不吭独自跑去旧金山学艺术，马修只好取消婚礼。三个月后莉莉重新回到纽约，想要和马修重修于好，伤透了心的马修是否原谅莉莉？另一方面，互有好感的二人——泰德（乔什·拉德诺 Josh Radnor 饰）和罗宾（寇碧·史莫德斯 Cobie Smulders饰），在经过种种事件、多番波折后，终于了解自己真正的感情，于是二人决定在一起。而花花公子巴尼（尼尔·帕特里克·哈里斯 Neil Patrick Harris 饰）依旧享受着他的单身汉生活，但在其他方面他却保持神秘，泰德等四人发现他们其实并不了解巴尼，于是都开始对巴尼好奇起来……
