22年前，求校诺曼贝兹在自家的旅馆中，求校刺杀了正在淋浴的女房客玛莉莲，而被关进了精神病院，一关就是22年。如今，加州政府根据医生的诊断决定让他重回社会，他获释后，返回了山丘上的破旧旅馆。诺曼在当地一家餐馆中找到了新工作，担任厨师的助手，因此认识了年轻的女服务生玛丽，两人坠入了情网。但是不久后，诺曼却在自家的窗口，看到了死去的母亲，接下来，小镇上便发生了一连串的谋杀案，这些凶杀案会是诺曼的所作所为吗？他真的痊愈了吗？
