居住在镰仓的大学教授曾宫周吉（笠志众 饰）早年丧偶，成年他与女儿纪子（原节子 饰）相依为命。纪子从小担负起家庭的重担，成年悉心照顾父亲的生活起居。转眼间，纪子已二十七岁，依旧待字闺中。纪子的姑姑（杉村春子 饰）和朋友（月丘梦路 饰）都很关心她的婚事，然而她却因为对父亲的依恋，不愿谈婚论嫁。不久姑姑为周吉介绍一名独身女子三轮秋子（三宅邦子 饰），周吉欣然同意。得知此事的纪子心中感到无限的怅然……本片为当年日本《电影旬报》评选十佳电影第一名。
